2008 Player of the Year - Miles Seaborn
This past year a fellow Flyer received one of the greatest honors that disc golf has to offer, getting sponsored. Miles was asked to join the Elite X Team for Discraft. His outstanding tournament play prompted both Discraft and Dynamic Discs to sponsor him. Miles made us proud with several great tournament finishes, winning over $4000 in 2008.
- 1st in the Dunn Memorial Java Classic
- 2nd in the Hott Final at Circle R
- 2nd at Piney Woods
- 4th Z Boaz Open
- 1st Sports City Fahrenheit Fling
- 2nd Dynamic Discs Cedar Hill Open
Miles lives in Benbrook and began playing disc golf in 2003 at Z Boaz. I asked Miles what got him hooked on the sport. He responded, “I got hooked after a friend took me to Z Boaz one day and beat me! I couldn’t have that, so I went and got some discs and practiced until I beat him. The better the players I played against, the more I wanted to beat them. So I guess it’s really the competition that keeps me motivated to keep getting better!”
When asked what he enjoys about playing in North Texas, Miles said, “The obvious is that we have a TON of awesome courses in the DFW area. Courses like Z Boaz and the Vet really help create a well-rounded golfer, I also like the central location. While we aren’t close to the NT’s (National Tour Events) and Majors, we are very central to a lot of other tournaments. I could play 2 or more tournaments a month and not have to go more than 5 hours from my house. Can’t beat that!”
I also inquired about how our area courses have helped prepare him for playing tournaments out of town. Miles felt that “Z Boaz and the Vet make good golfers, and I think it’s because they force you to learn different shots. Between these two courses and the tons of others in the area, a DFW golfer has to be able to throw all kinds of shots. I don’t think I have played a course yet where I have not found at least 1 hole that is very similar to a hole at Z Boaz. I don’t find myself in situations where I don’t know what to do. Our courses really prepare you for everything.”
Finally, just for fun I thought it would be interesting to see which ‘non-Discraft’ disc Miles would throw if he could…and the chosen disc was a Rhyno! He said that “it is one of the best approach putter on the market. But Discraft is producing some great stuff like the Banger GT and Zone.” For more information about Miles, like what’s in his bag and tips on improving your game, please visit his Discraft page. Way to go Miles! Keep it up in 2009 and make us proud!
