Taking the plunge !

Today, we as a society have grown accustom to the spoils of instant gratification. Sad, but very true. If history has taught us anything: perseverance and paying one’s dues ultimately will lead to success. This memorial day weekend, whilst we Americans have been given an opportunity to celebrate our freedom, we too at Funkytown Flyers Disc Golf have been given reason to celebrate. A celebration like non other in our brief, yet progressive history.

This holiday weekend, The Funky One’s were welcomed as a feature to The Backwoods Paddle Party. Backwoods being the regions premier outdoor outfitters, were able to bring together a community of like minded individuals to celebrate our mutual love of the outdoors, the Trinity river, good times, good food, good beer, good tunes, good people and paddle sports galore. Accompanied by Fort Worth based Martin House Brewing, downtown’s premier draught emporium: The Flying Saucer, bluegrass ensemble The Blackland River Devils, Hobie Kayaks and a multitude of other similar vendors, Funkytown Flyers Disc Golf was enabled to do what we do best, custom disc golf course installation.

The success of the weekend was primarily due to years worth of massive efforts put forth by the Trinity River Vision Authority.   The Trinity River Vision Authority (TRVA) is the organization responsible for the implementation of the Trinity River Vision (TRV) – a master plan for the Trinity River in Fort Worth, Texas. It is underway now – connecting every neighborhood in the city to the Trinity River corridor with new recreational amenities, improved infrastructure, environmental enhancements and event programming. The TRV will create Panther Island (formerly Trinity Uptown), a vibrant urban waterfront neighborhood, expand Gateway Park into one of the largest urban-programmed parks in the nation and enhance the river corridor with over 90 user-requested projects along the Trinity Trails.

The vision is quite simple, progressive utilization of our abundant amenities to the benefit of our community through the promotion of active living in our fair city. Long time residents have already seen the tremendous impact it is having in our community and our local economy. Most notable to the disc golf community was the implementation of two disc golf courses in the Gateway master plan. One of which is complete-ish, the other shall be forthcoming as the kinks are worked out with the first installation.

More important than another opportunity to install a temporary disc golf course on one of the city’s most pristine pieces of property, was the opportunity to showcase what exactly “those disc golfers” are actually doing. Harmoniously along side all of the days activities, disc golf seamlessly lends itself to the outdoor culture this city is becoming infamous for. The interaction could not have gone better as an instant invitation to next years event was extended the moment the course installation was complete. Furthermore, connections and encounters beyond our wildest imaginations were enabled simply by doing what we do best… Those in attendance will remember for some time to come how diverse of an experience the Backwoods Paddle Party truly was. More important, the relationships that will develop from this experience could possibly change the Fort Worth disc golf experience forever.

Progress will take time, patience and due diligence upon our behalf. With persistence shall come the reward. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was Fort Worth. The doors that have been opened from our involvement with this event, certainly will speed up that process, a little…. Maybe a lot… Stay tuned, stay in touch, be involved, patronize our supporters, help us demonstrate our value in our beloved community. You may be surprised by what the future has in store and how soon we could get there!! Keep on keepin’ on Funkytown, we certainly will.

We look forward to what the future has in store, and we hope you do to! A very big thank you to the staff of Backwoods Fort Worth. You are a wild and accommodating bunch and we were fortunate to share this experience with you. Those that stuck around after the rain’s came were privy to a little more excitement than many would have expected. Most fulfilling for this writer was an opportunity to share with his son an apparent Backwoods tradition, an exercise in trust of the mighty Trinity. Watching my son plunge a step further into manhood was a moment I will never forget, and for that Backwoods, I do thank you!

Be well, be an outsider, be FUNKY!
