Veterans Park Grant

We have launched a yearly course development initiative. This year with our leadership team changing, we got a late start on club business. With the summer fast approaching we came up with the idea of using our funds in a single grand gesture as opposed to the “here and there” spending we have done in years past. We will spend the majority of the club’s yearly funds to help install a new course or to complete the development of an existing course.

With Brandon getting Gateway fully constructed with tee signs and pads, with “Nascar Dave” spearheading Weatherford’s 18 hole expansion, with Mace and other Z locals spiffing up Z Boaz with new tee signs and those sweet benches, with Brice in Crowley and Brandon in Haltom City putting in tee pads it came down to one last course on the West side that had a lot of catching up to do.

Veterans Park is an incredible course that has been in the ground since the early nineties and is badly in need of a makeover. The tee signs are no longer of any use and many of the tee pads need expanding to match the grandeur of the course. The ADGA is the strongest local course club in the Metroplex and has recently climbed out of a huge financial hole under the leadership of Director Greg Browning and others. They have restored the greatness of the areas longest running A-tier and bolstered their membership. Many Funkytown members are also ADGA members and we hope to forge a bond with this long standing club and to encourage more of their members to join our effort.

So Greg and the ADGA have agreed, in return for our $3000 donation, to order and install new tee signs that will greatly improve the course’s navigation and expand and update any of the tee pads that need it. The Funkytown Flyer logo will be displayed on each tee sign as the sponsor along with any other sponsorship they generate. Additionally, they have agreed to have the work completed in time for the Veterans Park Open in November, making the Funkytown Flyers a major sponsor of this event. We are hoping this will boost our club’s profile and give you all a recognizable accomplishment you can be proud of in 2010. The ADGA is currently seeking city approval and will announce further hole sponsorship opportunities shortly.

In the future our course development grant will be awarded only after club-wide participation in the decision-making process based on proposals we receive from those seeking the funds. In January we will begin accepting proposals submitted by members and local clubs. After a deadline, we will review the proposals and submit them to the membership for a vote. More on this in future newsletters. For now we hope you all can appreciate this accomplishment and are excited about how strong the courses and local disc golf community is becoming. We hope the entire Metroplex disc golf community will come to think of the Flyers as a potential source of funding for their course development projects as well as spark additional initiative on behalf of all of you to take on course projects.
